Mike and Kay Hawkins have served as the South Carolina Awana Missionaries for over 20 years. In 1981 they began their ministry with 20 churches using Awana; today there are over 200! Mike and Kay have a strong burden for children and parents in South Carolina. There have been many Moms and Dads come to know the Lord as a result of their children attending a local Awana club. They are totally faith supported by their local churches.
Their ministry is to introduce to area churches the Awana ministry, train those people to operate their own Awana club, and help in any other way possible. After a church has decided to use the Awana program Brother Mike will train the leaders and be there to run the first Club night for them. Many people shy away from youth ministries because they are afraid of being given a "how to" book and then being left alone to figure the rest out on their own. Mike and Kay's ministry goes far beyond the introduction of Awana.
Mike and Kay have three children of their own, one daughter-in-law, and one son-in-law. Sandi and her husband Alex live in Anderson, SC and also serve on the ministry board. Josh and his wife Kristen live in Mauldin, SC. Sam is still in high school and lives in Anderson with Mike and Kay. Brother Mike and his entire family are actively involved in the Adopt A Club ministry of Awana. As a matter of fact, Sandi met her husband Alex in 1985 at one of the first Awana clubs in Mexico. Of course she did not know it at the time, but God had already chosen Alex as her husband.
Brother Mike, his family, and some of the ministry board members have also helped with training, conferences, and Awana camps in many other places such as Mexico, Nicaragua, Russia, and some countries in Africa. They have also helped with the development of the new Awana ministry called Reach A Country.
